20 models to compare

Canister, hang-on or internal aquarium filter?

Placement and priming decide it. At about 70 gal, Fluval makes all three: the 307 canister (303 gph), AquaClear 70 (300 gph) and U4 internal (65 gal, 260 gph).

The 307 self-primes and the AquaClear primes by hand.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Flow figures cannot size an aquarium by themselves

Maker flow ratings run from 65 to 925 gallons per hour, while maximum aquarium ratings run from 15 to 400 gal. Fluval’s range supplies those endpoints. Flow and aquarium capacity describe different limits; use the selected model’s installation and aquarium guidance together. The ratings do not show an equal measurement standard across brands or a sizing formula.

Decide where the filter will live and how it starts

Fluval’s Performance canisters use self-priming descriptions, AquaClear power filters use manual priming, and the underwater filters use submerged operation. Maker flow, capacity and setup descriptions identify the filters, leaving filtration, noise and water quality unmeasured. Eheim Classic canisters include manual priming descriptions. Compare cabinet space, aquarium-rim space and in-tank placement before choosing between canister, hang-on-back and internal designs.

The type names describe placement, not cleaning access or the dimensions of your cabinet.

Open the contents list before buying replacement media

Media-inclusion information is available for 16 products. A positive inclusion value does not explain which media types or replacement quantities arrive in the box. Read the exact contents, servicing steps and replacement-media options before budgeting for upkeep.

Before you buy

Will I get the rated flow once it’s installed?

Don’t count on it. The rating is the maker’s, and hose runs, lift height and clogged media all reduce what a pump moves in a real setup.

Why do four filters show no numbers?

The AquaClear 20 and 50 and Marineland’s Penguin PRO 125 and 275 had carried figures copied from other models, so those were removed. They stay on the page for reference and leave the results as soon as you set a band.

Do more media stages mean cleaner water?

Not necessarily. Stages describe how the media is arranged: the FX4 and FX6 have four, the U1 has two and the other 13 have three. How well a filter clears waste also comes from the media you use and how often you clean it. Placement and priming decide it. At about 70 gal, Fluval makes all three: the 307 canister (303 gph), AquaClear 70 (300 gph) and U4 internal (65 gal, 260 gph). The 307 self-primes and the AquaClear primes by hand. Eheim’s Classics carry Eheim’s own ratings, so compare within each maker.
